Well, last night's New Year's Eve plans initially consisted of all of us (Eric, his parents, and me) going to see the movie "It's Complicated." Plans changed.

As they were getting out of the car at the curb, Eric's mom slipped and fell on the icy sidewalk in front of the theater. I was inside waiting for them, so I didn't see any of it. When she tried to move to get up, she experienced tremendous pain at the left hip joint. She could not put any weight on her leg. She dragged herself onto the seat of the car; as long as she didn't move, she was fine. Eric quickly went inside, got a refund on our tickets (which he'd purchased earlier online) and spoke with the theater manager to report the accident and fill out an accident report. There was no official report, other than for the manager taking down info which he said he'd forward to their insurance company.

The manager did come outside to see how Jackie was and apologized for the condition of the sidewalk. I showed him where the slip happened, as well as other slippery spots I noticed when I came down the front steps.

Eric left to take her to Shady Grove Hospital in Rockville. As I was leaving the theater parking lot, I saw the manager outside laying down salt on the icy areas. At least, he seemed responsive, though it's something that should have been done earlier.

We all arrived at Shady Grove around 10 PM. They immediately registered Jackie and took her into triage. Within 30 minutes, she was placed in one of the ER rooms. The initial diagnosis from the triage nurse, based on Jackie's symptoms, was that she most likely had a broken hip. I called the theater, and relayed this to the manager for inclusion in the accident report.

At around 11:40 PM, they took Jackie in for Xrays. I decided to head home at that point since there was nothing there I could do. I took Eric's dad home, since it was on the way. At 12:02 AM, Eric called to let me know that the Xray revealed a possible hairline fracture of her hip. She was scheduled for a CAT scan to confirm this.

I arrived home around 12:40 AM (stopped for gas on the way). After settling in, I tried to salvage the evening as best I could with *some* type of televised New Year's Eve revelry, but everything was over. I finally found a repeat of CNN's broadcast with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin but it was 2:15 AM by then and I couldn't keep my eyes open. So much for seeing the Key West drag queen descend in her giant shoe! I went to bed.

I eventually heard the noise of a key in the front door lock. I looked at the clock...5:23 AM. When Eric came in, he told me the CAT scan revealed that nothing was broken after all, though she still couldn't put any weight on her leg. They admitted her overnight, and if things aren't better by later this morning, they'll have to do an MRI.

Eric came to bed and crashed. I tried going back to sleep, but couldn't for some reason. So, I got up, took a shower, and sat down to update my Facebook and type this.

Thanks for reading. Happy New Year.
